James C. Berner, Managing Director, is a senior Managing Director with the Diversified Infrastructure team at BlackRock, which currently manages over $14 billion for investment in the energy, transportation and digital sectors across four long-term funds. Mr. Berner also heads BlackRock’s new core, open-ended Evergreen Infrastructure Fund, which had its first close with nearly $1 billion in capital in October, 2023, and is an active investor in similar sectors.
With Diversified Infrastructure, Mr. Berner is responsible for investment origination and execution, leading its efforts in the power generation, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and shipping sectors. He has originated and executed over $2.8 billion of investments across those Funds, and is a member of the Funds’ investment and management committees.
Mr. Berner has over 25 years of experience in infrastructure investing and lending. Prior to joining BlackRock in 2017, Mr. Berner was a Managing Director on the Energy Infrastructure team at First Reserve where he executed over $750 million of equity investments. Prior to joining First Reserve in 2011, Mr. Berner was a Managing Director at General Electric Capital Corporation in its Energy Financial Services division (including investments in shipping), and was based in the USA, UK and Singapore. Prior to GE, he was a Vice President, Project and Structured Finance, at Deutsche Bank Securities Inc. in New York focused on the US and Latin America.
Mr. Berner earned a B.A., cum laude, from Cornell University in 1990, an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies in 1996 and an M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business in 1998.
